Renewable Energy

Vail Resorts is offsetting 100% of Beaver Creek's electricity needs by purchasing renewable energy generated from wind.

Oil, natural gas and coal are non-renewable energy sources, which once used up, cannot be replaced. Pollution is also created when oil and coal are used for energy.  Sun, wind, water and geothermal energy have been around since the Earth was formed and are renewable self-sustaining non-polluting energy sources.

Why are we doing this
Well, for starters, it is just the right thing to do. Our choice is to embrace clean, renewable energy. While we are not a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, we can take steps to reduce our own limited emissions and lead by example.

It also makes good business sense.  We feel that companies need to start diversifying their energy sources and looking for ways to encourage further development of alternative fuels.  This offers companies greater choices and competition for their power needs.

What is the impact of our decision?
It will help to avoid over 211 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions; this is equivalent to taking 18,000 cars off the road.

How are we doing this?
In an effort to secure this amount of wind-generated power for Vail Resorts, in the most efficient and environmentally sensitive way, is working with Colorado-based Renewable Choice Energy.  They will be putting us together with wind farms across the country.

Vail Resorts is offsetting 100% of Beaver Creek ski areas electricity needs by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (REC).  A renewable energy credit (also known as "Green Tag") is a legal representation of a measured amount of renewable energy entering the energy system. A REC represents one Megawatt-hour of renewable energy entering the power grid and displacing energy that would have been produced through burning fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas. Each REC reduces approximately 1,400 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. When an individual or company purchases RECs, they are paying a voluntary premium in order to support more renewable energy in the system. As a result, they get to claim the legal credit for supporting the environmental results associated with their purchase and their dollars help to increase the amount of renewable energy in the system and reduce pollution.
